Long Live Jenkins

Third Eye Blind has released a new single. Apparently, they have an EP coming out on November 18 called "Red Star." I suggest you check it out. Thanks to Mike for the link.

About the song: it's pretty political, which I usually give a big "herrrr durrrrr derpy derp" to. But, the lyrics are actually so dumb that I can't even fault the song for being too political. I really like the song, though. I also like the nod to M.I.A., naturally.

Oh man.

And you can buy yourself some implants,
But you can't buy soul threat level orange.

This has major Sing-Along-Status written all over it, John. Admit it. I also love how it sounds like it was written by a 15 year old and yet is executed so freaking well.

LOVE the nod to M.I.A. This appeals so thoroughly to my twin obsessions with cross-referencing and pop culture...so it's basically a wet dream come true for me when pop culture starts to cross-reference itself.

PS. I hate the term "alt rockers".

Oh, I totally admit it. I've listened to it like 70 times since three days ago.

I'm tickled to death about how listenable it is -- it gives me hope that they're actually going to release an album full of good songs. I've loved all three of their LPs, but I've been admittedly jittery about the quality of their forthcoming release.

And yeah, I love cross references in pop culture. I just love the idea of Stephen Jenkins sitting alone in his room and listening to "Paper Planes" 30 times in a row and thinking "good Christ this song is bananas." And THEN having the chutzpah to put it in their new single. I love Stephen Jenkins because he really is a kind of poor man's Mick Jagger. He's just an unbelievably arrogant front man who respects the actual industry just enough to give props when props are due (even if it's out of left field).

I could probably go on forever about him. In fact, I'd love to write a paper about Brandon Flowers, Stephen Jenkins, and Mick Jagger. Maybe I should just do that for the hell of it.

Also, the term "alt-rock" probably makes Jenkins (and I) bash his own skull in with Vanessa Carlton's jaw.

Write the paper. I'll turn it in (you know, just for laughs!) and see what kind of a grade it gets. From whence the Vanessa Carlton reference? Are they connected somehow?

Nevermind. They dated, right?

And he like wrote 99% of her songs ever.

These lyrics are soooooooooo bad. Oh man. Love it.

Actually, I've been thinking; you should write the paper and submit it to a music magazine! You could be a Chuck Klosterman for the Chuck Klosterman generation. Just promise me you won't send it to Blender.
